Vanuatu: Tsunami warning is issued after massive 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocks the Pacific

A tsunami warning was issued for Vanuatu and New Caledonia after a powerful earthquake rocked the South Pacific on Thursday evening.

The earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, struck 123 km off the southern coast of Isangel in Vanuatu at a depth of 48 km just before midnight. It was later revised to 7.1.

Minutes after the US Geological Survey reported the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a warning about the potential threat.

The South Pacific region lies on a tectonic fault line known as the “Ring of Fire” and is notorious for earthquakes.

There have been no reports of damage at this stage.
