A firefighter died while putting out a fire that engulfed a country house.

Emergency crews were called on Tuesday to reports of a house fire on Grosse Vale Road, in Grosse Vale, about 10 kilometers west of Richmond, northwest of Sydney.

The firefighter, a 51-year-old man who was on duty with Fire and Rescue NSW when he was alerted to the fire, was told by NSW Police.

The man lost consciousness on the spot while fighting the flames that engulfed the house.

Paramedics performed CPR on the man, but he could not be revived and he later died.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident has begun.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
