Queen Margrethe of Denmark will spend Christmas with her sons Prince Joachim and Prince Frederik and their families – after spending last December 25 apart following title row

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is set to spend Christmas with her sons Prince Joachim and Prince Frederik and their families.

It’s a stark contrast to the Danish royal family’s holiday plans last year, when they held it separately due to a dispute over royal titles.

Tensions arose after the monarch stripped Prince Joachim’s four children of their titles of prince and princess – a move that the sixth in line to the throne openly criticized.

But it appears the issue has now gone under the bridge after the Danish Royal Court confirmed the Queen will be joined by her sons at Marselisborg Palace this year.

The show of unity has caused a furor in recent weeks after photographs of Prince Frederik, 55, partying in Madrid with glamorous Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova – and without his wife, Princess Mary of Denmark, 51 – appeared in Spanish magazine Lecturas.

Queen Margrethe will take up residence at Marselisborg Palace from December 20th. She will celebrate Christmas Eve with Prince Frederik and his family, as well as Prince Joachim and Princess Mary and their two children.

Prince Joachim’s son Count Felix will join his family on December 25, while his brother Count Nicholas will spend Christmas abroad. He is currently studying at the University of Technology in Sydney.

According to a Danish magazine, Prince Joachim and his family spent Christmas in Vietnam last year. She and Nuand Australian-born Princess Mary and her family spent the festive season in Hobart.

The magazine detailed that the trip had been postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, writing: “Joachim finally got the chance to show the children the country where their grandfather, Prince Henrik, spent many years of his childhood and youth.”

Queen Margrethe’s high-profile decision to strip her grandchildren of their HRH status made headlines around the world and sparked a bitter row within the family after her youngest son Joachim opposed changing his children’s titles.

The monarch later apologized and admitted she had “underestimated” the consequences of her actions, but said it was “a long time coming.”

She said the decision was aimed at allowing Countess Athena, 11, Count Felix, 20, Count Nicholas, 24, and Count Henrik, 13, to live normal lives without royal obligations.

The show of unity among the Danish royal family comes amid a media storm that continues to rage following photographs published in Spanish magazine Lecturas of Prince Frederik partying in Madrid with glamorous Mexican socialite Genoveva.

The socialite is currently seeking peace and quiet in San Sebastian, at a residence owned by her ex-husband’s family.

Earlier this month, the Danish royal family broke their silence on the scandal and told Danish publication BT that they “do not comment on rumors and innuendo.”

Both Frederick, a fourth cousin of King Charles III, and his wife Mary have not yet personally commented on the rumors.

Members of the Danish royal family were shocked by reports earlier this month that Frederick had spent the afternoon and evening in Madrid with Genoveva.

The photos show the couple strolling through Barrio el Jerónimos, where Genoveva lives, after a walk in El Retiro park in the center of the Spanish capital.

Spanish magazine Lecturas reported that earlier in the day the couple visited a Pablo Picasso exhibition and then headed to a restaurant to have dinner and watch a flamenco performance.

Amid the frenzy over the photographs, Prince Frederic carries on his usual business at home while Genoveva seeks peace and quiet in San Sebastian, at the residence owned by her ex-husband’s family.

While reporting details of Genoveva’s party with the Danish prince last week, Lecturas shared details of how they claim the evening went down.

The magazine claimed that after visiting the Pablo Picasso exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, the couple took a stroll through El Retiro park in central Madrid on the afternoon of October 25.

After the walk, around 7:00 p.m., Lecturas stated that Frederick and Genoveva went to her apartment building separately and both returned around 9:00 p.m., two hours later, both changed into evening clothes.

In photos from the evening, Genoveva ditched her chic tan coat with a tie belt in favor of a white shirt, black wide-leg trousers and a black jacket pulled over her shoulders.

Frederick, meanwhile, appears to have swapped his dark blue jacket and brown trousers for a white shirt, dark trousers and a smart dark jacket. They reportedly left the building separately again but got into the same white car.

The magazine claimed that the couple watched a flamenco performance at the Spanish restaurant El Corral de la Moreria, which ended at midnight.

It also claimed that they remained at their table, flanked by two of the Danish prince’s bodyguards, while other customers left, the waiters finished their shifts and the lights were turned off.

Lecturas claims the couple did not leave the restaurant until 1 a.m., and then went outside and got into their car. According to Lecturas, in a “gesture of politeness,” Crown Prince Frederik opened the car door for his interlocutor.

The next day, the magazine reported that the heir to the Danish throne was taken by car to the airport, from where he flew home to Denmark.

Following the publication of the photos, Genoveva issued a statement to Hola! denying any romantic involvement with the prince.

The socialite’s statement said: “I categorically deny statements that suggest a romantic relationship between myself and Prince Frederick.”

She added: “Any statement of this type is not only completely devoid of truth, but also maliciously misrepresents the facts.

“It is now in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the necessary steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy.”
